Lionel went on a field trip with the first grade students today. They went to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center and had an awesome time. They saw sharks, seahorses, otters, jellyfish, stingrays and fish. They even saw a scuba diver feeding the fish. Lionel loved the trip and his time with the first grade students.

Guess where Lionel went this weekend - Hershey’s Chocolate World, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, The Sweetest Place on Earth. Sure wish I was there with him. While he was there he went on a tour to see how candy bars are made. The tour began in tropical rain forest where the cocoa beans grow – how cool. Then it went on to the factory. There he saw how they turn the cocoa beans into milk chocolate and candy bars! Imagine a room full of chocolate candy bars – yum! When the tour was over Lionel picked out a chocolate bar to try. My favorite are the Hershey’s Kisses – hint, hint!

Lionel spent a day with the first grade students learning all about apples. Some of the activities that Lionel participated in were graphing, weighing, sorting, sinking or floating and reading apple books just to name a few. Most of all Lionel really liked making homemade applesauce. He was able to cut, measure out ingredients and share it with the students once it was done. Wow – what a great way to spend the day!

Look who was back from Hawaii in time for the first day of school! Lionel surprised everyone this morning, when he rode to school on one of the busses. He was so excited to see everyone from last year and he can not wait to meet all the new teachers and students.

Lionel just sent this picture. It was taken at Kualoa Park, at Kaneoho Bay, on the island of Oahu. If you look in the background, you can see the tiny island Mokolii (which means little lizard), the island is often refered to as Chinaman’s Hat beacause of its shape. Chinaman’s Hat is one of the top spots for taking pictures on the windward (east) coast. I wonder if he will make over to the North Shore?

Lucky Lionel! He is spending his days on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. I suspect Lionel will be there for awhile, he is staying in a condo right in Waikiki. He did say he will be back in time to start school in September though. According to Lionel, the first thing he did when he got settled in was walk down the beach to see the Duke Kahanamoku Statue, you know ”The father of modern surfing,” the one with all the leis. He said he has also visited some of the other normal tourist destinations like Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor, but his favorite thing has been snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. He saw lots of cool stuff and got to swim with all kinds of fish and even some sea turtles. Lionel said at times he felt like he was in Finding Nemo – he was so close to them. How exciting! I can’t wait to hear what he does next. He said he would give me an update soon, so check back.

Lionel just accompanied Mrs. Aardahl and her husband on a trip to Nashville, Tennessee. While there he went to a show at the Grand Ole Opry and listened to a variety of musical performers. Lionel also went on a riverboat cruise on the General Jackson where he saw the Peking Acrobats perform amazing feats like stacking 7 chairs and balancing upside down on the top chair. He visited Cheekwood Art Museum and Botanical Gardens and hiked the 1 mile Sculpture Trail too. Lionel even went to Mansker’s Frontier Station, a replica of a 1780’s frontier fort that both Daniel Boone and President Andrew Jackson visited. Lionel enjoyed watching a historical re-enactor use the iron forge. Lionel and Mrs. Aardahl had lots of fun on their trip to Nashville.

Lionel visited Jamestown with the 4th grade and had a wonderful time. At the Indian village, he went inside the house and saw what they called a kitchen. On the pier he went aboard the Susan Constant, the largest ship the English used to come to Virginia. At the English fort, he saw how the English fired their weapons. It was a long day and Lionel was very happy to get back to the bus and air conditioning. Lionel can’t wait to go back and visit the first settlement. Maybe you can go see what Lionel saw.

For the past few years, a female Mallard duck has laid her eggs in Lynnhaven’s courtyard and a male Canada goose has carefully watched over them. Yes, a duck and a goose! This year was no different. Everyone, Lionel included, had been patiently awaiting the arrival of the ducklings - they are so cute. A week before SOL testing the babies finally hatched. Lionel gave them some time to grow before he went out to meet them. He wanted them to get a little older, so he wouldn’t scare them too much. You know lions are carnivores, they do eat other animals. Lionel thought it would be best to let them out of the courtyard and lead them back to the creek behind the school. He said they needed to go back to the creek and learn how to be grown up ducks from their mommy. He was sad to see them go, but told them he would be here next year when they came back to lay some more eggs.

Lionel spent Saturday at Lynnhaven’s Spring Carnival. He had a blast! There was so much to do. He rode a pony, dunked Mr. Ortiz in the dunk tank and played lots of games. His favorite game was finding the straws in the hay stack. Balby sure liked that game too. She kept coming back time after time, squealing as she dug for straws. Man can she squeal! Lionel put in to win some of the raffles – he was eyeballing The Royal Chocolate stuff, but he didn’t win. And his favorite, the Carrabba’s gift card, went to Mrs. Ballard. Lionel’s hoping she will take him with her when she goes. I think he is dreaming! Mrs. Ballard loves Carrabba’s – there is no way she is taking Lionel with her.
